7 Ultimate Tips for Road Biking

Road biking is a fun activity with loads of health benefits. However, even though you're used to city cycling, going off-road could be challenging. This is why it's important to learn how to prepare for road biking before setting off on your adventure.

Learn how to check your bike.

Checking your bike is an excellent way to prevent damage or road accidents that may come along the way. Studies suggest that almost 89% of road accidents could have been prevented if motorists regularly checked their bicycles and cars before hitting the road. Here are the top routinely check-ups you should learn:

  1. Tires: Check the tire pressure and inspect the tires for any cuts, punctures, or deterioration.
  2. Brakes: Check to see if your brakes are operating correctly and adjust as necessary.
  3. Drivetrain: Check the smooth operation of every gear by shifting through them. Examine the chain for any wear indicators and lube as required.
  4. Handlebars and stem: Check the handlebars and stem's tightness to ensure they won't move while you're riding.
  5. Saddle: Make sure your saddle is secure and at the proper height.
  6. Lights: Check your lights' functionality and make sure they are fully charged.
  7. Pedals: Check the security of your pedals and lubricate them if necessary.
  8. Quick releases: Make that the quick releases on the wheels, handlebars, and saddle are tightly fastened.

Follow road rules and regulations.

Road laws and restrictions apply to cyclists as well. There are several reasons why cyclists should make sure they abide by traffic laws and regulations, aside from avoiding tickets and penalties.

Safety comes first. Lowering the likelihood of crashes and accidents, according to the laws of the road, helps to assure your safety and the safety of other road users. The next step is to keep the good cycling-vehicle interactions going. Following traffic laws fosters a culture of responsibility and legality among bikers, strengthening the bond between them and cars.

Cycling in line with traffic regulations would also boost your visibility, making it simpler for drivers to anticipate your movements and adjust their behavior. You'll have a better riding experience as a result. Because you are abiding by the law and lowering your risk of accidents, you can ride with more assurance and peace of mind.

One of the most crucial road regulations you should maintain is securing the required cycling accessories, such as helmets and bicycle lights. The absence of these two is considered a primary cycling offense on most major roads, leading to tickets and penalties.

Use hand signals.

It's crucial to use hand signals when bicycling for several reasons: Hand signals help other drivers know what you're planning to do, like turn or change lanes. This improves the safety of all road users and helps to prevent collisions. When other drivers know your plans, they can adjust their behavior, making your movements more predictable.

Utilizing hand signals can help you be more aware of your surroundings while driving, especially in congested or low-light situations. They can also warn other drivers of your presence.

Aside from these, bicyclists are required by law in many areas to use hand signals. You can efficiently convey your objectives, improve safety, and adhere to the law by employing hand signals.

Use GPS Tracker all the time.

Cycling with a GPS tracker can provide several advantages.

Turn-by-turn navigation is a feature that GPS trackers can offer, making it easier to navigate your way on unknown roads and trails. Aside from this, you can easily plan your route. GPS trackers can map routes, calculate distance, and record your progress.

In terms of safety, a GPS tracker can aid your rescue in an emergency. Real-time tracking is a feature that many GPS trackers also provide, enabling friends and family to follow your journey. GPS trackers can also record your speed, distance, elevation, and calories burned, enabling you to keep tabs on your progress.

For group rides, you can keep up with your riding companions by using GPS trackers to monitor the progress of group rides. With a GPS tracker, you can enjoy more effective navigation, monitor your performance, and increase your safety while riding.

Maintain visibility on the road.

Here are some recommendations for improving your bicycle visibility.

Put on colorful or reflective clothing. To be more visible on the road, go for bold hues like neon yellow or orange. To improve visibility in low-light situations, consider using reflective tape or wearing clothing with reflective materials. It's also best to use smart bicycle lights. When riding at night or in low light, use your bike's front and rear lights to increase your visibility.

A good strategy is to ride in the middle of the lane rather than near the side of the road to be more visible to other drivers. Aim to make eye contact with drivers whenever possible to ensure they have noticed you and are aware of your presence.

Avoid using your phone or headphones while riding since these activities can distract you and make you less visible to other drivers. You can lessen the possibility of a collision or mishap while riding on the road by boosting your visibility and making yourself more obvious to other road users.

Stay hydrated.

Cycling enthusiasts should always stay hydrated. Dehydration can hurt physical performance, resulting in tiredness, lowered endurance, and decreased power output. You can cycle more efficiently if you keep up optimum water levels. Sweating aids in controlling body temperature when cycling, and staying hydrated aids in replenishing lost fluids and maintaining this function.

Dehydration can also affect cognitive performance, resulting in slower reaction times, focus, and concentration. Adequate hydration aids the body's ability to bounce back from the physical demands of cycling by lowering muscle pain and promoting the healing process.

Aside from these, dehydration can result in conditions like heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can be deadly while cycling. By remaining hydrated while riding, you may improve your physical performance, control your body's temperature, preserve cognitive function, aid in recovery, and prevent illnesses brought on by the heat.

Train regularly for road biking.

Here are some pointers for road cycling preparation.

Start slowly. Start with short rides, and as your fitness improves, progressively increase the distance and intensity. Do interval training. Include high-intensity interval training in your regimen to increase strength and stamina.

Focus on the hills. To develop strength and endurance, incorporate hill climbs into your training regimen since they are a crucial component of road biking. It's also best to change up the terrain. Your training rides should contain a mixture of flat roads, hills, and uneven terrain to provide your body with various challenges and increase your adaptability.

Remember to cross-train, too. Include various forms of exercise in your program to improve overall fitness and lower the risk of injury. Examples include strength training or running. Ensure you are properly fueled and hydrated before, during, and after your rides. Proper nutrition and hydration are crucial for training.

Rest and recuperate. Give your body enough time to rest and heal, especially after strenuous rides or training sessions, . You may improve your strength, endurance, and adaptability while getting ready for road biking by adding these training tips to your regimen.

Always prioritize your safety.

Road biking can get really exciting, but remember to keep your adrenaline from getting the best of you. Your safety should always be your priority, regardless of commuting to work, road biking, or joining a cycling race.

Customerservive deserves a 5 Star

I ordered the Navi 600 & CubeLite II bundle and recieved it quite fast (I live in Germany). The mount of the Navi 600 got updated and wasn‘t the same as the one on the product page. Unfortunately the updated version couldn‘t fit around my roadbike handlebar. I contacted the customerservice and got a quick solution. They send me over the old mount for free! Now I can use the Navi 600 without any problems. The products are nice aswell and work as they should. Customerservice 10/10 Thanks again!!!

These lights are soooooo good!! I have both the Navi 600 front and the CubePro rear. Initially I bought the rear light via an instagram advert as a bit of fun thinking the quality wouldn't be all that great. What a surprise! And they work! Just like they say they do.
